Crevasse advection increases glacier calving

چکیده

Abstract Iceberg calving, the process where icebergs detach from glaciers, remains poorly understood. Moreover, few parameterizations of calving can easily be integrated into numerical models to accurately capture observations, resulting in large uncertainties projected sea level rise. Recent efforts have focused on estimating crevasse depths assuming tensile failure occurs when crevasses fully penetrate glacier thickness. However, these approaches often ignore role advecting calculations depth. Here, we examine a more general depth model that includes advection. We apply this idealized prograde and retrograde bed geometries as well geometry with sill. Neglecting advection results steady advance ice tongue formation for all temperatures, sliding law coefficients constant slope considered. In contrast, suppresses increases rates, leading retreat. Furthermore, allows grounded front stabilize top sills. These suggest radically alter rates hint future fracture need carefully consider lifecycle plays process.

Dynamics of glacier calving at the ungrounded margin of Helheim Glacier, southeast Greenland

During summer 2013 we installed a network of 19 GPS nodes at the ungrounded margin of Helheim Glacier in southeast Greenland together with three cameras to study iceberg calving mechanisms. The network collected data at rates up to every 7 s and was designed to be robust to loss of nodes as the glacier calved. Data collection covered 55 days, and many nodes survived in locations right at the gl...

“Crevasse” Lesions

Objective: The purpose of this article is to report on a distinctive pattern of linear femoral head chondral lesions that were observed in 7 patients who underwent hip arthroscopy for the treatment of mixed-type femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). Design: Between 2010 and 2012, 702 patients were treated with hip arthroscopy at our institution for symptomatic FAI. Among those patients, 7 were fo...

Modeling the Controls on the Front Position of a Tidewater Glacier in Svalbard

Calving is an important mass-loss process at ice sheet and marine-terminating glacier margins, but identifying and quantifying its principal driving mechanisms remains challenging. Hansbreen is a grounded tidewater glacier in southern Spitsbergen, Svalbard, with a rich history of field and remote sensing observations. The available data make this glacier suitable for evaluating mechanisms and c...

Step-Wise Changes in Glacier Flow Speed Coincide With Calving and Glacial Earthquakes at Helheim Glacier, Greenland

[1] Geodetic observations show several large, sudden increases in flow speed at Helheim Glacier, one of Greenland’s largest outlet glaciers, during summer, 2007. These step-like accelerations, detected along the length of the glacier, coincide with teleseismically detected glacial earthquakes and major iceberg calving events. No coseismic offset in the position of the glacier surface is observe...

Modelling the impact of submarine frontal melting and ice mélange on glacier dynamics

Submarine melting of the calving face of tidewater glaciers and the mechanical back force applied by the ice mélange layer are two mechanisms generally proposed to explain seasonal variations at the calving front of tidewater glaciers. However, the way these processes affect the calving rate and glacier dynamics remains uncertain. In this study, we used a finite element-based model that solves ...
